Computer Information Systems
Computer Information Systems
The Computer Information Systems (CIS) program will prepare you for entry level business positions requiring the use of computer applications, and will qualify you in the use of word processing, spreadsheet and database management applications. More advanced students may enroll in telecommunications and computer networking courses.
The CIS department offers a wide range of courses focusing on computer literacy, from which you will gain knowledge and understanding of computers and their uses. You’ll gain three levels of proficiency, which we call T-O-P:
- 1. Terminology – Ability to read, write, and understand “geek” language.
- 2. Operations – Ability to use computers to get work done, e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and database management.
- Programming – Ability to code instructions for computers to operate on desktops, networks, and on the internet.
In some instances, if you have with work experience in the above mentioned areas you may challenge courses based on that experience. If you are seeking advanced placement, you must meet with an instructor to verify your knowledge and skills.
- Develop an understanding of the problems and issues confronting individuals and society in general in the use of computers including the social, political, economic and ethical issues involved in their use
- Analyze problems and design solutions using the program life cycle concept, HIPO charts, and program logic flowcharts
- Use and write simple Visual Basic code
- Create presentation-quality charts of several types
See College Catalog for required pre-requisites for CIS courses.
The U.S. Department of Education requires colleges to disclose a variety of information for any financial aid eligible program that “prepares students for gainful employment in a recognized occupation”. The information provided in the link(s) below describes the graduation rates, the median debt of students who completed the program, and other important information regarding gainful employment for the latest completed academic year (as of July 1). Full-time status is defined as a student that enrolls in 12 units for both the fall and the spring semesters of a given academic year.
