Learning languages can also expand the heart and mind and help us in our search to understand who we are as human beings.

• Demonstrate rudimentary to more advanced level of cultural and historical understanding of the societies associated with the German language as students advance through the course levels.
• Demonstrate progressive proficiency of the German language as students advance through the course levels from beginning to intermediate high as stated in ACTFL guidelines (American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages).
• Demonstrate competence in listening, speaking, reading and writing ability through the progressive course levels, in conjunction with the course content of each class.

Courses should be taken in numerical/ letter order, beginning with GERM 1A: Elementary German.

GERM 1A and GERM 1B fulfills the university requirement for foreign language coursework.

German has the largest number of native speakers in the European Union (more than English, Spanish, or French). It is also among the ten most commonly spoken languages in the world. German is the second most commonly used scientific language in the world.

German isn’t just for “Germans” any more (but actually it never was). Almost a fifth of the world’s books are published in German, and few of these ever appear in English translation. Many of the Western world’s most important works of philosophy, literature, music, art history, theology, psychology, chemistry, physics, engineering and medicine are written in German and continue to be produced in German. Knowing German is a great way to read in original language!

Knowledge of German increases your job opportunities with German and foreign companies in your own country and abroad. Proficiency in German helps you to function productively, not only while traveling as a tourist or studying as a student in German speaking country but also for an employer with global business connections.

After learning German you can make the most of your travels not only in German-speaking countries, but in many other European countries where German is widely spoken. Many Europeans learn 2 or 3 foreign languages, and one of them is usually German!
