Health Professions and Occupations

Courses in Health Professions and Occupations (HLTOC) are most often used to fulfill degree or certificate requirements for majors at Merritt College (College of Alameda’s sister college in Oakland), including the Emergency Medical Technician program and Radiological Science program. Topics include Medical Terminology and Transcription.

If you are majoring in Health Sciences or an Allied Health program, you may benefit from taking courses in the Health Professions and Occupations (HLTOC) Department. In taking HLTOC courses, you will learn the following:
* How to understand basic and advanced medical terminology
* How to spell and pronounce medical terms
* How to transcribe medical information
* Basic understanding of pathophysiology and terms used to describe disease

Upon the completion of courses in HLTOC, the student will be able to:

1. Apply in written form medical and biological terminology and concepts as to their structural content;

2. Construct Latin and Greek word roots and their meanings as related to medicine and biology;

3. Compare and contrast historical usage of terminology to the language of modern medicine.

Our coursework will help you to complete a Health Sciences or Allied Health degree including Sonography or Radiology Technician programs, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Community Health Worker programs. This will prepare you for numerous entry level jobs at many hospitals and clinics.
