ESL Test

By the end of the program, you will be able to read, write, speak, and critically think in English. These language skills will help prepare you to enter and complete vocational or academic programs and fully participate in the community you live in.

We have four levels of difficulty in the ESL program at College of Alameda:

• High Beginning
• Intermediate
• High Intermediate
• Advanced

Each student starts in a different level depending on their score on the ESL assessment test. You should complete High Beginning before Intermediate, Intermediate before High Intermediate, and High Intermediate before Advanced. We also offer elective courses that students at all levels can participate in.

1. You can apply for admission by completing the form via the web at https://www.peralta.edu or in person at the Admissions and Records Welcome Center.
2. The next step is to take an assessment test in English to help evaluate your current skills. Appointments are required since space is limited. The Assessment Office is located in the “L” Building, 2nd Floor, (510-748-2307). You will attend an orientation session on the day you are assessed to familiarize yourself with the College and its services.
3. After the assessment and orientation, a counselor will help you develop an educational plan and select appropriate courses based on your objectives and assessment evaluation. The Counseling Office is located in the “A” Building (510-748-2209).
4. Once you have successfully completed the above steps, you may enroll in your classes via the Internet at https://www.peralta.edu, or in person in the Admissions & Records Office in the “A” Building.
