Mission Statement: The COA Mathematics department strives to inspire learners to build mathematical skills, make connections [between mathematics and the world], and contribute to society.
The Library offers TI83 Calculator checkout. Use your student ID to check out for a period of time. Please visit the reference desk on the first floor of the L building.
Math 15 is Math for Liberal Arts is UC/CSU transferable and meets the math requirement for Associate’s Degrees at the College of Alameda. For transfer, this course is appropriate for most majors in English, Art, History, Communication and similar majors. Note: some universities may have different math requirements for the aforementioned majors; please consult with your counselor about the appropriate math course for your major and transferring university.
- Use quantitative reasoning to solve everyday mathematical problems in the workplace and in the home.
- Read, write, and critique technical writings and analytical arguments.
- Convey and interpret information through visual representations.

College of Alameda’s placement process is compliant with AB705 which is a bill that requires a community college district or college maximize the probability that a student will enter and complete transfer-level coursework in English and math within a one-year timeframe and use, in the placement of students into English and math courses, one or more of the following: high school coursework, high school grades, and high school grade point average (GPA). A report written in Spring 2019 summarizes the department’s planing and implementation.
AB 1805 is a bill that requires our college to 1) inform students of their rights to access transfer-level coursework and academic credit English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) coursework, and of the multiple measures placement policies as outlined in AB705 and 2) publicly post our placement results which can be found here.

ASSOCIATE DEGREE FOR TRANSFER – MATH(AA-T) draft describes possible 2-year course taking sequences based on being a mathematics major.
BSTEM Pathways for Students is a visual representation of the math sequence through Differential Equations.

Below is a general description of the different Math requirements for different pathways. Note: different universities may have different requirements for majors; please confirm with your counselor the required math course for your major and transferring university.
| PATHWAY OPTION 1:
LIBERAL ARTS MATH
If you are planning to major in things like History, Art, Ethnic Studies, Music, English, other non-technical fields, or pursuing an Associate’s degree, this is the path for you. |
PATHWAY OPTION 2:
STATISTICS
If you are planning to major in things like Psychology, Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Political Science, Health Education, Child Development, other non-technical fields, and any major from the Liberal Arts Math pathway, this is the path for you.

B-STEM (BUSINESS, SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS)
If you are planning to major in things like Business Administration, Finance, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Architecture, Computer Science, or other technical fields, this is the path for you |

If you are not transferring, but are seeking an Associate’s Degree or Certificate only, your program may have specific math requirements. Check with the program and a counselor to make sure you are taking the math course you need.
Depending on your major, you may need less math courses than others. For students who are Business, Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (BSTEM) majors, here is a visual representation of a potential course sequence. Consult with your counselor about your math choice options, major and transfer requirements, and class enrollment.
